SINGING SATURDAY CHALLENGE
Music is such a big part of my life. It can stun you with emotion, wake up the funny bones, cause involuntary jitterbugging, plunge deep into your soul. It can be cathartic or uplifting and truly amazing. I love any music that is played well, with real instruments and genuine singers, so it is impossible for me to pick favourites. Sometimes a song transports you to a memory or you learn something new about those you love, as this song by Irving Berlin showed.
Sisters
I first heard this song by the Puppini Sisters. When I played it for my parents, I had no idea it would flash back to a fond reminiscence…When Dad first married Mum, he and Mum’s brother dressed up and sang Sisters for Mum, her Sister and their Mother and Father.. Apparently it was hilarious. I’d love to go back in time to see it. Mum and her sister are still close today.
Here is Rosemary Clooney (George’s Aunt) and Vera Ellen singing it in the movie, White Christmas.
Sisters, sisters
There were never such devoted sisters,
Never had to have a chaperone, no sir,
I’m there to keep my eye on her
Caring, sharing
Every little thing that we are wearing
When a certain gentleman arrived from rome
She wore the dress, and I stayed home
All kinds of weather, we stick together
The same in the rain and sun
Two different faces, but in tight places
We think and we act as one
Those who’ve seen us
Know that not a thing could come between us
Many men have tried to split us up, but no one can
Lord help the mister who comes between me and my sister
And lord help the sister, who comes between me and my man

So much so, that I had to watch it last night. My partner thought I was crazy watching a Christmas movie in July! I told him I only wanted to watch up to where they sing “Sisters”, but that was just a ploy 🙂

We actually have that one on DVD. It’s a regular to view, usually around Christmas 🙂 Nice memories. Mom used to sing the songs. She sang all the songs from the movies she loved.

Thanks for your kind words. You post has a great photo, and thank you for introducing me to a new song! What a lovely lyric it has. I was just watching Top of the World (live) over on Frizztext’s tagged C and Karen was playing drums as well. I’d forgotten how talented they were.

This post really made me smile. We love old movies at my house and my daughters have known this song since they were little! They’re 24 and 26 and still sing it to me for days after we’ve watched White Christmas! Unfortunately, I don’t sing very well, but I’m endlessly entertaining in other ways according to my family! 🙂

My dad and mom sang that song, too, to my sister and me when we were little kids! Hadn’t thought of the lyrics in a long, long time…

It sounds like your father and your uncle were a lot of fun. I can see how two men performing Sisters might be hilarious 🙂 It has been ages since I have watched White Christmas. I enjoyed the video.

Apparently it was very funny to watch. It was long before I was born so I didn’t get to see it, unfortunately. But My family can be pretty funny at times, so I’m lucky. Thanks for your comment.

The costumes are beautiful and well used for this song. It’s hard to imagine that Rosemary Clooney’s nephew is now over 50. 🙂

I love the costumes too! I wish clothes were more fitted like they used to be. It’s a wonderful song. Yes, they must be a talented family.
